Healthy Holiday Foods

It’s the most wonderful time of year again, but this year looks slightly different than the Christmas of the past. One thing that is associated with Christmas time that looks different this year is entertaining. Christmas parties have been either canceled or drastically reduced in size for some people.

While our Christmas entertaining may look different, we can still enjoy food and good times with those closest to you. Cakes and pies are the most prominent of dishes served at Christmas gathering but we can make our entertaining healthy and delicious at the same time. Having a small get-together but want to keep it healthy? Remember, make those calories count and make them useful!

An easy treat that is healthy is a meat and cheese board. Make sure to use all-natural meats without preservatives. Lean turkey or sliced chicken or great with low-fat cheeses such as Swiss, cheddar, or American. Add in apple slices and some grapes to your tray along with pecans, Brazil nuts, or walnuts to give your family more protein. You can also throw in some olives (be careful as they are high in fat), pickles, or pickled okra.

Make sure to put out a raw vegetable platter but instead of unhealthy ranch put out some hummus or use the yogurt-based ranch found in the produce section of the grocery store. Use carrots, celery, broccoli, tomatoes, squash, and zucchini.

Also, adding a cut-up banana topped with a strawberry makes for an adorable and healthy Santa hat!
